Column: off the record..., vol. 9-347
@U2,
February 22, 2009
I'm really hesitant to pass any judgment on songs/an album that I've only heard through computer speakers, and that's especially true with what sounds like a pretty interesting collection of sound ideas in No Line on the Horizon. I really love what I've heard, but I think these songs are going to sound a lot more complete on a proper stereo system. We'll do an album review on @U2 here soon, probably a group review with several staffers sharing thoughts in one article like we did for Atomic Bomb in 2004 and Leave Behind in 2000. My primary thought right now is that U2 sounds free on this album. They sound like they're making the music they want to make, rather than trying to write songs that they think will get on radio, on MTV, etc. I think that's a Good Thing. While waiting for the @U2 review, how about reading an album review written by a 11-year-old boy?
My son sent me that via e-mail. I think the @U2 Line of Succession is in good hands, don't you? :-) Is the equals sign on the album cover or isn't it? That's one of the big questions at the moment. Depending on the site you visit, you'll see the NLOTH album cover with the equals sign sometimes, and without it other times. Well, I think this photo on Flickr answers the question. It's from our former staffer, Teresa C., who works in radio and received her copy of NLOTH a couple days ago. In the comments on that photo, she explains that the equals sign is only on the outer cellophane wrapping, not on the actual CD cover/booklet. There's a lyric in Moment of Surrender that mentions "vision over visibility." Fellow fan Rajiv Udani pointed out on a mailing list that Bono mentioned that phrase in a 1989 NBC TV special. You can read the NY Times archives to get the reference. Did you catch the news that Christopher Nolan died on Friday? He's the award-winning poet from Mt. Temple Comprehensive School who suffered from cerebral palsy and wrote with a pointer attached to his head. U2 says "Miracle Drug" was inspired by his story, and an amazing story it is. R.I.P. Christopher Nolan. I don't really think it means anything, but this is interesting: HMV has a product listing for U2 3D on DVD. So, too, does CD Universe. Those are the only two I know of. But true 3D-at-home is still a ways off, so I don't see this coming out any time soon. Ready for some U2 tour dates? On ZooItalia, a concert promoter has apparently said that the tour will be announced on March 6th. I've seen some news articles saying it'll be March 9th. Either way, I think it'll be somewhere in that general time frame. If you're jonesing for some tour rumors, feel free to check out this post in @U2's forum. If you visited @U2 over the weekend, you may have noticed that we had a temporary data loss. Our main news database went kaput, and things were so FUBAR that even the backup couldn't be fully used. We lost about the last two months of articles in the news database. Most of the stuff was easily recovered from our U2 news mailing list, but we needed help identifying and locating all of the @U2 original stories published in that time frame -- the OTR columns, Like A Song essays, Question of the Month, U2 Lists, etc. I posted about this on the home page, and asked readers for help. The e-mails started coming in right away. So, I want to thank everyone who helped -- but two fans in particular deserve a special shout-out: Eric White and Cathy Smetana went above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you, guys! The news database has now been fully restored and all missing articles are on the site again. Unfortunately, there may be some broken links now, but we can live with that ... and we hope you can, too. And finally ... get your Christmas/holiday list started now with these U2-related 10-inch mini guitars. (Bono's Irish Falcon Gretsch is the one going on my list!)
See ya next time... © @U2, 2009. |
