Column: off the record..., vol. 6-220
@U2,
July 23, 2006
I loved reading the reactions last week on the U2Australia mailing list after the new dates were announced. Such joy and elation -- and with good reason. Think about what they've been through:
Whew! A new member of @U2's Forum posted a couple days ago about hearing from Dennis Sheehan (U2's tour manager) that the band is going to put out a new single in September. Skepticism is always in order with Internet rumors, but really ... this makes perfect sense. We already know that the Zoo TV DVD and the official book, U2 by U2, are coming out in September. Both of those are interesting to bigtime U2 fans, but maybe not as much to the casual fan. And neither will generate a whole lot of publicity buzz in music circles. But a new single would do exactly that -- get the music people talking, get U2 front and center in the spotlight. A new single would help promote the book and the Zoo TV DVD. I also think that more Vertigo tour dates are coming, and this would give U2 even more momentum / buzz for expanding the Vertigo Tour -- but this part is pure speculation by me. Lastly, a new single makes sense in light of the new song clip that hit YouTube last week. The story on that, from what we're told, is that Bono was with friends out on the terrace and turned up the music so the friends could hear it. The people in swimsuits looking toward the house are not U2 fans. Cedric, the guy who recorded the clip, had his battery run out and couldn't tape the whole song. (Justice?) (Thx KM) If you live in Canada, or otherwise have a way to watch CBC-TV, there's a documentary on Monday night about Michael Cohl, the man who convinced U2 to change how it runs its tours. Before PopMart, Cohl pitched U2 on the idea of selling the entire tour to his promotion company -- bypassing local promoters in each city, allowing the production to run from a central hub, and guaranteeing the band X dollars no matter how many tickets were sold. Might be an interesting show.... Site news: Staff writer Khoa Tran has published a "U2 Connections" piece covering the ties that bind U2 and Peter Gabriel. It's part of the series that Angela Pancella began several years ago. And finally ... FAA radar tracking video of FedEx airplanes trying to avoid a thunderstorm while landing in Memphis.
See ya next week. © @U2, 2006.
