"I still wince every time I see myself in that scene."

@U2 staffer Brad Biringer (who helps with the Collectors' section) is like me in that he has a fascination with the Mojave Desert in general, and the U2 connections in particular. (To be fair, Brad says his fascination is with American deserts overall, not just the Mojave...but I digress.) And like me, Brad has also found the site of the real Joshua tree in the Mojave desert. Unlike me, Brad is a pretty damn good photographer.

All of this is relevant because Brad has posted a web page about his trips to the site of the real Joshua tree. His first visit was in October 2000, and he was one of the first U2 fans to find the tree after it had fallen to the ground. His most recent visit was this past March when he discovered some new rock messages laid on the ground by other U2 fans who've visited the fallen tree.

The story is good and the photography is beautiful -- it's worth a quick visit to his site. If you're on dial-up, be patient as the photos load. You'll be glad you waited.

I don't know much about Tori Amos, so what an introduction-of-sorts this was: Tori did a cover of U2's "Running to Stand Still" last Thursday night (August 7th) during a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. I don't know if this is a regular thing she does on her tour, or if it was a one-off inspired by the setting of the show, but it's amazing either way.

Tim K. has posted an Mp3 of her cover on his web site, instantsunshine.net. The site has caused my browser to freeze both times I tried reaching it. I'm on a Mac using Explorer, so you may not have the same difficulties...but if you do, here's a direct download link.

Is it just me, or is Better Than Ezra's Friction Baby the most underrated album of all time?

If you're interested in the upcoming book Inside the Zoo with U2 by Lola Cashman, you might like to see the book's jacket. It was sent to @U2 by the folks at Blake Publishing, who are handling the book. You can see the inner and outer sleeve of the book in the FILES section of our [atu2] news mailing list. Yes, you have to be a subscriber (which you should be anyway since we send a lot more news to the list than what gets posted here on the site!).

Watched Star Wars tonight on TBS. What a great movie, even 20-some-odd years later.

Great progress is being made on our Lyrics section, thanks to the unstoppable Ian Ryan. I hate to give out an ETA because it's such a colossal project, but after seeing the progress I'm thinking a couple weeks instead of a couple months like I originally guessed.

They are "worldly and ungodly." They "sing of depression, women, drinking, [and] use base profanity." The lead singer has written songs that have "turned [people] on sexually, or inspired them to change." He claims spirituality, but lives "a lifestyle completely secular including swearing, drinking, smoking and associating with the immoral celebrities like himself." And he "represents complete filth, which he makes clearly evident by his own mouth!"

"They" are U2, and "he" is Bono.

God help me, if this isn't the funniest web page I've ever seen, it's the scariest.

(Thanks Anna for the link...I think!)

See ya next time!
