"We will do a commercial with Apple for our album, and no money will change hands, which is important, because we have been offered boatloads of money from many other people." -- Bono, 2004 |

Column: off the record..., vol. 3-88
@U2,
August 03, 2003
Is this the slowest U2 news period ever? It might be. Our home page is bare, the news list is quiet. But no complaints here. It's nice to have time to enjoy real life and do other things for a change. Things will get busy again soon enough... When was the last time you listened to Under a Blood Red Sky? For me, it had been about two years since I last listened to it, a stretch of time that came to an end last week when I put that album out in the car. And I was amazed at how young they sound, especially on "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" -- almost like a teenage U2 cover band or something. It was weird but great, it's such a great little collection of live songs. And I had it playing a few times on the way to dropping off the kids at daycare. My 5-year-old is quite the U2 fan (as I think I've documented in this column once or twice in the past), and boy, nothing warms the heart like hearing your young son sing along without prompting during "40." And now he asks to hear that song whenever we're going somewhere in the car. I'm the happy Dad. Anyway, pop that album in your stereo if you haven't listened in a while and let me know if you recognize those kids that are singing U2's songs. :-) You may remember this story from a few months ago, about Scottish Radio Holdings discovering a bunch of old live recordings in its vaults, and how they were negotiating with the bands and labels to have these recordings released. We knew there was a U2 recording in the discovered material, but we didn't know until now what show they found: March 24, 1983, at Tiffany's in Glasgow, Scotland. That's the word from a source at SRH, who tells @U2 they're waiting for a yes or no from U2 and Universal music. I think you guys got it right on the latest poll question -- in 30 years, U2 probably will be most remembered for "One." I think it's mainly because that song seems to continually be chosen as the favorite "video/audio tribute" song by TV and radio people everywhere. And it also seems to be the band's choice (and Bono's choice during solo performances) to sing at most special events. I think "One" will take its place right alongside "Imagine" as one of the all-encompassing, timeless, comforting message songs in times of any type of crisis -- personal, political, international, etc. LAST CALL: We're going to be doing Fantasy Football leagues for U2 fans like we did last season. Email me <matt @ atu2.com> if you're serious about joining a league. We'll be doing some leagues through Sandboxplus.com, which is a fee-based site (and worth every penny), and some leagues through Yahoo!'s free service. If you email to express interest, make sure to mention if you want to do a Sandbox league or a free league. If you want to do a Sandbox league, let me know if you already have a Sandbox membership.
See ya next time! © @U2/McGee, 2003. |
