Column: off the record..., vol. 3-87
@U2,
July 20, 2003
So it's only been about six months since the redesigned @U2 was launched, and now finally the Collectors Guide section of the web site has been fully restored. What's just been put back is the COLUMNS section, which is (IMHO) just an amazing resource for information about specific U2 collectibles, releases, and that kind of information. Peter Longworth's articles on vinyl and CD radio shows are great, as is Chris Nilsen's piece on the 4-pack singles sets, and Eric Naulaerts' guide to U2's tourbooks (which we need to update). Great stuff all around, including a couple new columns that have just now been posted. We also restored the CONTACT US form so fans can send in questions about collectibles to be answered by the staff. Next up is the LYRICS section, which will be databased to allow for easier use by site visitors and easier management by those of us behind the scenes. That project is underway. Don't yet have an ETA. Interesting results to the latest poll question on the home page, where the Elevation Tour squeaked past Zoo TV in response to the question "What is your favorite U2 tour?" There were close to 3,800 votes in the poll, and Elevation totaled only 39 more votes than Zoo TV. (see FanZone Polls if you missed the final results) Elevation is fresh in our collective memory, so it's no surprise it got the most votes. We asked this same question a few years ago (before the Elevation Tour) and PopMart was the winner then. What I can't figure out is the sudden appreciation for Zoo TV in the recent poll. When we asked before, Zoo TV was a distant third with less than 20% of the votes. After PopMart, the Joshua Tree tour came in second back then. The new poll question is another repeat from a few years ago: In 30 years, what song will U2 be most remembered for? Add one more to the upcoming book list: Bono - In Conversation. Described in the publishing industry thusly: "...interviews about his childhood, his family, his musical career and his work on behalf of indebted nations, conducted with his friend French journalist and novelist Michka Assayas." The book will be written/compiled by Ed Victor and is said to be published in September 2005. (Thanks DGH.) CMH Records is at it again: they've released their second Pickin' On U2 bluegrass tribute album. Volume one came out in late 2001, and you can find a couple articles and reviews in our news database. If you liked the first, you can order volume two from Amazon.com, or direct from CMH's web site. It's gonna set you back $16.98 either way. Reminder: We're going to be doing Fantasy Football leagues for U2 fans like we did last season. Email me <matt @ atu2.com> if you're serious about joining a league. We'll be doing some leagues through Sandboxplus.com, which is a fee-based site (and worth every penny), and some leagues through Yahoo!'s free service. If you email to express interest, make sure to mention if you want to do a Sandbox league or a free league. If you want to do a Sandbox league, let me know if you already have a Sandbox membership. I'll be preoccupied with real life things next weekend, so I don't think there will be a column. If Answer Guy turns in his column by Friday (fat chance), I'll get that posted early.
See ya next time! © @U2/McGee, 2003.
