"As a performer, I understand it takes a picture of me with the Pope or a president to get debt cancellation onto the front pages. Otherwise it's just too obscure a melody line." -- Bono |

@U2,
June 29, 2003
I thought U2's performance last weekend at the Special Olympics opening ceremony was very good, especially considering the rust / time-off factor. The songs sounded good and they picked two very appropriate tunes to play. But the more I think about it, the more I dislike Bono's political escapades at the end with former South African president Nelson Mandela. That was a day and an event created to celebrate and honor the athletes, a day about competition. I don't think the timing was right for Bono to go off about Mandela being the president of the world, and fighting for freedom, etc. That's all fine and good on its own, but I just don't think it was the right time to go political like that. I suppose it's just me.......... Couple loose ends to tie up still from Cleveland.... Jim Henke mentioned this in passing on Thursday afternoon (June 12th) when he was being interviewed by WBWC-FM, and now it's been officially confirmed and announced formally by the Rock Hall: The U2 exhibit, In the Name of Love: Two Decades of U2, will remain open through the end of the year. The new closing date is December 31st. (When it was first announced, the exhibit was scheduled to close in September.) If you were one of the lucky folks who attended the "Evening With Four5One" presentation Saturday evening (June 14), you may recall Steve Averill and Shaughn McGrath showing an image of their first concept for the Zooropa album cover. And you may remember they said it was quickly dismissed because they realized the image too closely mirrored an album cover by a band called Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. If you're curious, that album was called 1992: The Love Album, and you can see the cover at the wonderful All Music Guide web site. And lastly, @U2's Brian Streeter -- who coordinated the vendor tables for the Fan Celebration -- went beyond the call of duty and created a t-shirt to commemorate the occasion. Little did Brian (or I) know that the Rock Hall was also quietly planning to sell a limited edition t-shirt that day, which was very popular and sold out quickly. To avoid any conflict, Brian didn't sell his t-shirts at the Fan Celebration that day, and now has a small quantity still available for anyone interested. Email Brian at brunokiss1@aol.com to inquire about price, sizes available, etc. You can scroll below for a photo of the t-shirt.
See ya next time! © @U2/McGee, 2003.
