"Bono . . . doesn't slave for weeks on the nuances of a lyric or a melody. He comes in and kind of leaps, and that can be an incredibly inspiring thing to see."

This is one of those things that happens when you just surf the Internet. I mean, really surf. When you're just killing time, searching for bizarre things on Google, whatever. I can't recall for the life of me what I was searching for on Google about 10 days ago, but one of the first results was for a site titled "ECC - The Virtual Gunderphone". I noticed some U2 content on there, so off I went. Click.

Turns out ECC stands for the Evolution Control Committee (or Evolution Controlled Creations on other parts of the web site), which seems to be a musical group following in the footsteps of the now-infamous Negativland. ECC makes sample-based music without bothering to clear legal rights to use the samples. And it turns out that, back in 1994, they released an album called Gunderphonic which includes a song "Not Only In" that samples from both "Where the Streets Have No Name" (musically) and "Bullet the Blue Sky" (vocally).

ECC describes the 14-track album as "well planned, intricate sound collages, the kind that you hear once and they bounce around your brain for days." The other 13 tracks may fit the bill (I didn't listen), but the U2-sampled song is well, just kinda there. Interesting, it doesn't stand on its own very well.

You can use the link above to check it out for yourself, download the MP3s, etc. And if anyone can figure out how I found that web site, please clue me in.

BTW, if you're not familiar with the Negativland reference above, you can get up to speed with our "This Date in U2 History" section for 1991.

Mark Chatterton has opened a web site devoted to his book, U2 - The Ultimate Encyclopedia, which is an update of 2001's Complete Encyclopedia and due for release later this year. Of note on the web site is two pages devoted to ways in which us fans can help with the book -- updating information, contributing photos, etc. You get a copy of the new book, too, if your photo gets used.

An old friend, Brad, emailed this week with news that the WB network has picked up a television show to air next season called "One Tree Hill." Alas, there's no direct U2 connection I can find other than the title; the show is a high school basketball drama. TV Tome reports the show will start airing in January 2004.

See ya next time!
