"As a performer, I understand it takes a picture of me with the Pope or a president to get debt cancellation onto the front pages. Otherwise it's just too obscure a melody line."

off the record, from @U2

The rumor mill is heating up.

The French site U2 Achtung sent out a couple tweets on Saturday with what I think could be very realistic and legitimate news: an October 27, 2014 date for U2's new album. In response to some questions, the folks there followed up by saying that date is listed on a Universal Records mailer sent to a record seller. October 27 is a Monday, which fits typical album releases and means that the North American release would probably be October 28. It also seems like that would work well with a single release (and maybe an iTunes Festival performance) in September.

One other recent rumor came from a fan on U2start.com sharing evidence that a U2 tour would start next May in Vancouver.

When it comes to rumors, I think most fans are (understandably) in an "I'll believe it when I see it" mode. None of the above could be correct.  Or it could all be correct. But, in the end, I think that the influx of rumors in recent weeks is a sign that the U2 machine is actually starting up, or preparing to start up soon.

Interested in joining the @U2 staff?

Our @U2 Tours crew is underway with the big "review all our setlists for accuracy" project, and we're always interested in getting more help. If you love listening to U2 bootlegs, this could be the perfect job for you! (Even better is if you already have access to a lot of U2 bootlegs, but if not, we can help with that.) For details about what we're doing and how you can join the team, please read our @U2 Tours welcome guide -- it should answer your questions, but feel free to drop us a note if we missed something.

To give you an idea of what we're doing on the Tours site, a lot of the current work has been going back and listening again to shows from the 360 tour and comparing what we hear to what's listed on our Tours site. So far we've found a few new snippets that have never been listed: a Clash song called "Heed The Call Up" and a Gordon Lightfoot song called "On Yonge Street."

It's pretty cool to be finding new stuff like this in just the first week or two that we've really dived in to listening to U2 shows. It's kinda like piecing together a giant puzzle, or maybe unearthing hidden clues. So if that kind of thing sounds fun, do read that welcome guide I linked above and drop us a note.

One last update: On my iPhone, I now have a test version of a new @U2 iOS app. I mentioned a couple months ago that one of our readers is helping is build a new app since the old one was removed from the iTunes App Store, and we're slowly making progress. I'm not a developer, so I have no idea how long it's going to take or when it'll be done -- and really, I'm more interested in doing it well and doing it right than doing it quickly. But we'll get it finished and available in the app store as soon as we can.

Just like the previous app, the new one will be free. We had an internal staff debate about the pros and cons of charging 99 cents per download (because we want to pay the fan who's developing this for us and have other bills to pay), but everyone decided it was better to keep the app free and put out a call for Paypal donations when our next round of bills come due. That'll probably be in the next month or two, and I hope some of you will be willing to help. (Of course, you can also help out now if you're so inclined and we'll be equally grateful!)

And finally ... did you know that, back in 2009, The Edge lent his name and support to the "Swim A Mile" charity in Ireland to help raise money for children's cancer care in Ireland? That's obviously a very personal issue for him, what with his daughter Sian's illness, and so it makes this video all the more poignant.

Until next time...
