off the record, from @U2

In just a few days, we will be starting a brand-new year! It brings anticipation for things to come, whether it is new albums or visions that you dreamed out loud finally coming true.

So the latest chatter about a new U2 album came up recently via Paul McGuinness. Maybe 13 could be a lucky number and we will indeed be treated to something from the band next year? As much as I'm craving new music from them, I don't want it to be rushed in any way. I want them to take their time and not worry about getting it out by a specific date. I'd like it to be something they are really proud of. So they can take it slow in getting it to us. The new year hasn't even begun yet.

While on the subject of a new U2 album, I think what I get most anxious about when I hear about one is the chance for a new tour. I love getting to see U2 live and I am so intrigued as to what they will be thinking about for this next batch of live shows. I miss seeing them on stage performing and I think being sentimental about it is starting to impact my thinking. For Christmas, a friend bought me a bottle of Lady Gaga's perfume, "Fame." When I looked at the box and then the bottle, the topper looked a little bit like the 360 Claw. Am I literally going gaga or what?

The Killers are up there with U2 as one of my favorite bands on the planet. They pretty much share the stage in my heart. One of my major regrets was never getting to see them open for U2 during the Vertigo tour. As if I didn't adore them enough, on Nov. 17, during their show at the O2 in London, The Killers did a short cover of "With Or Without You." I have a friend in the U.K. who was at the show and got to see this in person! I love that they do U2 justice. Their cover of "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)" from AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered is emotional and stunning. They put a lot of care into not messing around too much with U2's original material, which I respect a lot. While there will never be a "next U2," I do feel that if there's any band that comes close for me, it's The Killers. When I saw them in Boston a few weeks ago, Brandon Flowers even did some fun band intros that would have been right up Bono's alley! During a stop on the Vertigo tour, Bono invited Brandon on stage to sing "In A Little While." There's always a good excuse to watch this performance. I love them both so much.

I'm such a sucker for "themed collections." If something is part of a limited edition, I have to have it. This fall, OPI created a line of nail colors inspired by the James Bond films. I've never seen a Bond movie, but I do love many of the songs created for them. I bought a sparkly silver shade named The World Is Not Enough, because the song is performed by another one of my favorite bands, Garbage (another U2 opening act from years ago). It's very pretty, so I decided to check online to see if I could find any beauty brands that had shades with U2 song titles. Chanel has a nail color called Vertigo, and while it probably wasn't named after U2's song, I still got excited to find it! It's pricey, of course, but if you're a major U2 fan with money to spend on jazzing up your makeup drawer in 2013, it's a fun option.

As is often the case with a new year approaching, we may have set goals for ourselves. Having a clean slate of 365 days to accomplish these things makes it seem possible. I often feel that way myself and up until a few days ago, I really took it to heart. I recently went on a job interview and it went so well that hours after the interview, I got a phone call from the (future?) employer that they wanted me to come in for a second one next week. This never happens to me. Ever. I typically have the worst luck and have been seeking a new job with a new meaning for what seems like an eternity. So for this to magically happen all of a sudden really took me by surprise. I was curious if I was about to score my ultimate goal.

I drove to my current job on Saturday morning and had the U22 album playing. I haven't listened to it in forever and you'd think that by attending so many 360 shows, I would know the setlist by now. After "The Unforgettable Fire" finished, I pulled into a spot in the parking lot and was about to head into work. Then I heard the opening swells of "Zooropa." I forgot the song was on the CD and was expecting to hear "City Of Blinding Lights" next. I decided to sit in my car to listen to the whole song, even though I'd be punching in late. I guess all of the emotion I had been feeling in recent months about how my year went caught up with me. Was I finally being steered into the right direction with this job interview? Is my new beginning starting now? Did my work crush think of me during the holidays? These were all questions I asked myself as I cried my eyes out. (We're all friends here, right? No embarrassment zone!) It was like the song was talking to me, "What do you want?" I needed a sign of some sort at that moment to tell me that, no matter what happens, everything works itself out. And "Zooropa" did that for me. I hope that, in 2013, all of you are able to conquer anything you might have ever doubted before. Even if you're unsure about it, don't let the fear get in the way. After all, uncertainty can be a guiding light.

Happy New Year!
