"I don't see Jesus Christ as being in any part of religion. Religion to me is almost like when God leaves -- and then people devise a set of rules to fill the space."

-- Bono, 1982

off the record, from @U2

My favorite NFL team had a terrible year, but I'm super happy that the Saints won the Super Bowl. I followed them pretty closely all year because of fantasy football and, even though I like Peyton Manning and the Colts as a whole, today was all about rooting for the Saints. And the fact that it was a great game made for an excellent day for this football fan. But I know we're not here to talk sports, so....

Has anyone seen Artificial Horizon yet? I asked on Twitter a couple days ago and the answer was a resounding "no." On January 19, I received an email from U2.com that said this:

"ARTIFICIAL HORIZON comes off the presses in late January and will be mailed to subscribers within a few weeks."

So perhaps they're getting ready to mail it out soon? Sounds like it. I'm not a fan of remixes in any way, shape, or form (and, to be frank, find the idea of a remix CD as a paid members' gift to be pretty lame) ... but the remix of "Get On Your Boots" that plays on this video does sound pretty good. One of our forum members wondered if that's on the remix CD; I have no idea.

Here's some sad news: According to a recent Irish Independent article, Ned O'Hanlon's company, Solo Too, is going out of business. Ned formed Solo Too in 2003, right around the time we did this interview with him. Prior to that, he and business partner Maurice Linnane had worked on every U2 album/tour campaign via their company, Dreamchaser Productions. Ned has continued to work with U2 under the Solo Too name, and probably will continue to work with the band in the future ... but apparently under a different name.

As a recent convert to the Rock Band video game franchise, I'm watching every bit of news out there about U2's plans to do a video game. Paul McGuinness recently reiterated that the band wants to do a game, and said "soon. Really soon." But Adam Clayton had previously said U2 would want to do something like The Beatles did, with actual likenesses of band members and a more immersive experience than the standard Rock Band look and feel.

Those two wishes are worlds apart. Doing something like The Beatles game doesn't happen "soon. Really soon." It takes a long while to put together something like that, and release the full game on disc with U2-themed instruments and accessories.

But there's another option: skip the disc and release the game digitally. Andrew, one of our readers, emailed us a link to this recent interview with Paul DeGooyer, one of the main guys behind the Rock Band series. In this segment, he talks about doing more band-specific games and possibly distributing them digitally instead of on CD:

Nrama: A lot of our readers asked about more band-specific games. Rather than going down a list, let me ask this; if Green Day is successful, do you plan to do more contemporary band-specific titles?

DeGooyer: More recent bands than Beatles?

Nrama: Right.

DeGooyer: Well, the phenomenon you mentioned earlier of Digital Distribution being really robust and efficient. Right now, a disc is the best way to deliver these features and immersive environments. It's not out of the question in the future for us to do more of these games, but I can tell you from what I see, from where I sit in this organization, the digital aspect is giving us the ability to get much closer to an artist's vision and get it to market more quickly, even timing to some of the artist's timings and imperatives. So I'm not saying we wouldn't do it, but especially with current artists having new albums or tours, having Rock Band be a piece of that, going the digital route might be the way to go.

That last part sounds interesting -- about timing things to coincide with new albums or tours. It's not necessarily a reference to U2, but it could be.

Heard on the rumor mill: The remastered Achtung Baby may come out later this year. (I'd actually be surprised if that happens. If they're still planning on putting out a new album this year, why compete against it with a remastered AB release, too? And why not wait until next year when you can tie it into a 20th anniversary of the album?)

The folks at U2.se recently posted some never-before-seen photos of U2's concert on December 15, 1982, in Stockholm. Hard to beat Bono in red pants, isn't it? :-)

I had a blast from the past this weekend when my son randomly decided to open up the piano bench in our living room. I'd forgotten that the bench opens and that I had stored stuff in there years ago. What did he find? Have a look:

U2 fanzines

Those are copies of a fanzine called Dream Out Loud that was produced by Donna S., one of my early online U2 friends. These are from late 1994, when few of us were online and several print fanzines were still going strong. There was a strong sub-culture of fanzine editors back then and they put out some great material. And then the Internet came along and rendered the print fanzine pretty much dead. But a lot of us still have great memories from those days....

And finally ... what if Bono & Edge tried out for X-Factor?

See you next time!
