Bono's Popart

Cartoonist draws U2 star's portrait

The Mirror, April 28, 2003
By: Fiona Wynne

Artist to the stars Niall O'Loughlin is hoping Bono will buy his latest piece of work - a portrait of the U2 frontman.

The Dublin-born cartoonist, pictured right, spent two months drawing the caricature.

Now he is waiting patiently to see if Bono is sufficiently impressed with the likeness to pay a tidy sum.

Niall, 33, said: "I got a phone call yesterday from the girl who was talking to Bono about my picture.

"She said Bono had seen it a few days ago and he liked it very much. She is just waiting for him to get back to her about maybe buying it.

"I would be thrilled if Bono bought my painting, it really would be a major boost to my career."

Niall is also in the final stages of completing a portrait of Bono's bandmate the Edge.

He said: "I am not finished with the one of the Edge so I think they are kind of hanging on for me to get that one done.

"I have been a huge fan of U2 for years, as are all Irish people I suppose, but I have been listening to their music for years. I never really thought about why I decided to draw Bono and the Edge, or indeed any of the my caricatures, they were just the first people to enter my head for some reason."

But Niall admitted he would be just as happy to give Bono the painting for nothing -- as long as he donated some money to charity.

He said: "I spent two months on the Bono painting and another month and a half on the Edge, so I would generally expect a few thousand for each one.

"But of course these are exceptional circumstances."

Niall is best known for his work on the Oscar-nominated short film Give Up Aul Yer Sins.

He has been working as an animator for more than 10 years, but recently he set up his own freelance business, The Caricature Company.

His collection also includes likenesses of Gerry Ryan, Roy Keane, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis and David Beckham.

Niall added: "I never expected to do so well but I have finally reached the stage when the orders are flowing in.

"I'm just thrilled to have reached a point when I can make a living of doing something I enjoy so much."
