Bono has joined a celebrity A-list of New Yorkers whose plush homes are a major tourist attraction in the Big Apple.
The U2 frontman is the first Irish star to make it on to a tour of the multi-million dollar homes of the rich and famous. His San Remo apartment, which has already been listed in the top 50 places to live in New York, is now featured in loop tours of the city. Hundreds of tourists now gaze every day at the swanky pad where Bono stays when in New York. It is located in the plush San Remo building on the luxurious Upper West Side along Central Park West. Neighbours include billionaire Donald Trump, Steven Spielberg, actors Dustin Hoffman, Steve Martin, Bruce Willis, designer Donna Karan and singer Barry Manilow. Bono bought the apartment some years ago for $15m from Apple computer founder Steve Jobs and fitted it out with 12-foot tall nickel and bronze doors and bedroom windows costing $79,000 a piece. The 3,500sqft pad has a sun terrace, a room set aside for entertaining, and stunning views of Central Park. Bono and wife Ali divide their time between France, Ireland and the U.S. In Dublin the couple have two adjoining homes in Killiney. In summer they retire to the French Riviera where Bono and the Edge own three adjoining homes. © Sunday Independent, 2007.
