"It's got a really spongy sound. We've found that when you're men, the slower tempos can be funky."

Bono: U2 Will Only Perform 'Ordinary Love' Once

@U2, February 11, 2014
By: Matt McGee

When U2 performs "Ordinary Love" at the Oscars next month, it'll be an instant rarity. According to The Wrap, Bono promised at yesterday's Oscars lunch that it'll be the first and last time they do that song live.

It'll be the only band performance of the song. After Mandela died, we didn't think it would be right to release it as a single, because it would seem like we were trying to capitalize. So we're going to do it this once -- but it's a pretty good place to do it.

Statements like that are always subject to change, of course. Early in the Joshua Tree tour, Bono said the band would never perform "One Tree Hill" live and after the Joshua Tree tour, there was talk of never playing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" again. Both of those songs have obviously been performed many times since.

The Oscars -- formally the 86th Academy Awards -- will take place March 2nd. "Ordinary Love" is nominated in the Best Original Song category.
