Bono, Pearl Jam Rock to Fight Poverty

AAP, November 17, 2006

U2 frontman Bono, guitarist the Edge and Pearl Jam have made a surprise appearance at Friday's Make Poverty History concert in Melbourne.

They joined forces to open the concert with a rendition of Neil Young's classic, "Rockin' in the Free World."

It had been rumoured that Bono would make a guest appearance at the concert but organisers provided an even greater shock with the inclusion of Pearl Jam.

During the concert, Bono, an anti-poverty campaigner, pleaded with the audience to help make a difference.

"Politicians all have to do what you tell them to do," he told the 14,000-strong crowd at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

"Scream it from the mountains."

Organisers say the concert, on the eve of the G20 summit in Melbourne, is Australia's biggest youth-run music event and is being broadcast live on giant screens throughout Melbourne, in regional cities Geelong and Bendigo, and Brisbane.

Jet, Eskimo Joe, Evermore and the John Butler Trio are among the Australian artists who will perform.

Several prominent Australian activists will also speak, including Reverend Tim Costello and 2006 Young Australian of the Year Tricia Broadbridge.

The world's leaders will come together this weekend for the G20 finance summit in Melbourne, addressing a range of global and domestic issues.
