Are U2 Talking Jubilee?
@U2,
August 11, 2000
The name of U2's next
album remains a closely guarded secret, but clues to a few possible
titles might be uncovered on the Internet.
The Dublin-based web and new media company Digital:CC has registered dozens of new domain names since mid-July, and each seems to reference various U2-related phrases. Among the names registered:
and many more. Digital:CC boasts a portfolio which includes the design of the official web site for U2's Best of 1980-1990 album as well as the official Million Dollar Hotel movie web site. They also have on staff Sebastian Clayton, younger brother of U2 bassist Adam Clayton. And if you need a last piece of evidence connecting Digital:CC to the band, this latest round of domains are registered with a street address which would place the company adjacent to the Principle Management headquarters in Dublin. (Their web site lists an address a few miles away in Dublin's Temple Bar area.) It is, of course, pure speculation that any of these domain names might be related to the next U2 album. But the names are nothing short of intriguing in that most of the names sound like U2. And Bono has commented more than once recently that the songs have been influenced by his work with Jubilee 2000's "Drop the Debt" campaign -- adding to the possibility of one of the Jubilee-related domains could turn out to reflect the album title. Even more intriguing is the timing involved in the registration of all these domain names. According to our research, the first set of names were registered on July 14, only two days after Principle Management issued a statement confirming the album would be released in late Autumn. The first set of names registered included (among others) the .com, .net, and .org versions of
The next set of names appears to have been registered three days later on July 17, and was possibly the result of U2 tweaking an album name. This group mostly includes different takes on the "U2atheart" domain registered three days earlier, and again the .com, .net, and .org versions were all registered:
One new name was also registered on July 17: U2jubilee.com, .net, and .org. And what appears to be the last set of names was registered three days later on July 20th, possibly indicating yet another change of mind on an album name:
As best we can tell, these are the most recent names registered. If that's the case, we suspect the new album might be called Talking Jubilee. But this is nothing more than speculation on our part, and should be taken as that. The process of researching domain names is imperfect and it's quite possible there are newer names that Digital:CC has registered on U2's behalf. It's also very possible that none of these names have anything to do with U2's new album, in which case we're all no worse off than we were at the beginning of this article, and we'll respectfully tip our caps to the good folks at Principle Management, Digital:CC, and the band members for leading us on a fun and wild goose chase...intentionally or not! Great thanks for the inspiration to do more research!] © 2000 @U2/McGee. All rights reserved.
