Answer Guy: Will my U2 tattoo earn me a trip backstage?

U2 Answer Guy

From: StacyLynn

Firstly, Answer Guy, I totally dig your column and try to never miss a week. If we lived anywhere near each other I'd buy you a round.

I have an appointment set to get my second tattoo (first U2 tattoo) in less than two weeks. I am using part of the words to "Walk On" as the centerpiece of the design. My questions are: a) do you think U2 gets peeved about people using their copywritten material in tattoo designs? and b) you think the $300 and pain I'm shucking out for this thing will ever earn me a trip backstage? (My tattoo artist seems to think it will.) Your answers won't have any effect on my getting the tattoo, I just wonder what you think.

Dear StacyLynn:

Firstly, I'd accept.

Secondly, U2 has said in many interviews that defiling one's body is a personal choice and not up to the band to encourage or discourage. They welcome seeing their copywritten material bent and molded to fit a wide array of body areas. As for the trip backstage, one Mary Lewis of Omaha, Nebraska, thought that her tattoo, which took nine hours to painfully apply, would get her backstage. It didn't. I won't tell you where she put her tattoo, but she couldn't cross her legs for nearly two weeks. She was told to check with the tour manager of the Ratt/Whitesnake reunion. She was last seen near Boise. Be careful.

Did Bono ever do a duet with Frank Sinatra entitled "I've Got You Under My Skin"? Or, did Bono just dub his voice into the song? Thanks!

Dear Greg:

They recorded that for Sinatra's first Duets album in the early '90s, and Sinatra's vocals are an update, not the original vocals from many years ago. The vocals were recorded separately and then mixed together at a later date. So, technically speaking, if your definition of "duet" is two people singing together in the same room at the same time, it was not a duet. But AG thinks you're splitting hairs.

From: T.S.

U2 normally has shows in Atlanta, Tampa, & Miami. In 1997 they did a show in Jacksonville. The show was not a sell-out. Then, during Elevation Tour, Jacksonville was skipped. Will U2 ever come to Jacksonville again? Do the guys have any say-so on where they will perform?

Dear Noelle:

Yes, they very much have a say in where they perform. The band was despondent after the poor attendance of PopMart Jacksonville, so much so that they voted on where to open the Elevation Tour and that little backwater town of Sunrise even beat you. But don't feel bad. Jacksonville can always boast the World Golf Hall of Fame, right?

From: Jeb

Was Edge's mixer (the only mixer I know of to be ever be expressly mentioned in any U2 liner notes) the reason why the rocking-est cut on The Joshua Tree, "Exit," was recorded at such a rediculously-low volume level? I developed a severe case of tennis elbow from the constant turning-up and turning-down of the volume knob on the factory-installed cassette player in my 1979 Ford Mustang! Now that I'm old, arthritis is setting in and I am considering a class-action lawsuit for compensation due to pain and suffering and need to know where to pin the blame.

Dear Jeb:

Unless you can file your class-action suit in Mississippi, or "Tort Town," you may be out of luck. There are still several pending lawsuits involving U2:

  • The Benevolent Order of Las Vegas Strip Clubs, Local 845 v. Clayton
  • Hewson v. Just for Men and Sy Sperling dba: Hair Club for Men
  • Evans v. As Seen on TV dba: The Bedazzler
  • Our Lady of Peace Catholic Girls School Class of 1998 v. Mullen, sued herein as "Dreamy Hottie"
