Answer Guy: When will Adam star in a video?

@U2, January 12, 2003
By: Answer Guy

There was a lot of response to my "Dating Advice for U2 Fans" column a couple weeks back.

First of all, although you better believe that Answer Guy's Pimp Hand is strong, he will absolutely not introduce to "Kat" any of the 50 guys who wrote in saying "Dude, hook me up!" And don't try Googling her as Kat is not her real name. And nowhere did she say she was looking for a date, she merely wanted to know if she should dump a guy just because he has a misguided definition of U2 fanness. So go out there and find your own datable U2 fan. Until the good folks here at @U2 begin the U2 Singles Online Service, we're all on our own. Say something to the person you see in the October t-shirt next time you're at the record store.

Secondly, I misspoke when I said that I didn't know any U2 superfans who were involved with other U2 superfans. Our own @U2er Sherry C. is presently happily married to superfan Steve, although she had to go across the pond to find him. I can only imagine what their home life is like when the slightest U2 reference comes on TV or when the car stereo begins playing that obscure Qatarian Maxi-single of "Pete the Chop." A nod of understanding? A hug of recognition? A quick smile shared between partners? That's their story to tell.

From: Tara

Now that Larry has his own video, when will Adam star in a video?

Dear Tara:

Back in 1996, Adam starred in a "Special Interest" video, which got some limited press at that time. It can best be described as "instructional" and "not for everyone." It is illegal in much of Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana, though strangely not in New Orleans. You can often find it behind the corral doors at your local video store. You will most definitely not find it at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.

It is known by several titles including:

THE LARGEST INSTRUMENT: The Adam Clayton Story

IT MOVES IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS

A CELEBRATION (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYIN')

RED LIGHT MINING TOWN: Adam Clayton Plugged

TRASH, TRAMPOLINE AND THE PARTY BOY: Adam Clayton After Hours

ELEVATION/ENDLESS DEEP: Clayton On Parade

There is no word from the U2 camp about whether or not we'll see Adam front and center during a music video. Bono may have learned his lesson after Larry's "I am so handsome that it makes me cry" fiasco with "Electrical Storm." B. won't soon relinquish the spotlight.

From: Paul

Why do so many of the band's songs sound so much "fuller" and emphatic live. for example, the concert versions of last night on earth and dirty day (mexico and sydney respectively) make their studio counterparts sound very wishy washy indeed. i cant even listen to them anymore. why cant they get the mix right?

Dear Paul:

I've often wished U2 would tour a new set of songs before they actually record them in a studio, but it'll never happen. I agree that the songs sound better live, it's hard to argue your point. The band seems too comfortable in the time-honored record, release, rehearse, tour tradition.

From: Martin

Hi. why is it that the only song U2 play live from Zooropa these days is Stay? Do you think there they will ever play other songs from this album live again? Lemon, Babyface, Zooropa or Dadys gonna pay?

Dear Martin:

They tried to play a handful of the Zooropa songs during the Zooropa tour in the summer of '93, but none of them really came across too well in concert. Listen to the Sydney video -- "Lemon" is a great song, but it's awful on this video; same for "Daddy's Gonna Pay..." Earlier in the tour, they tried "Zooropa" and "Babyface" and fell flat on their arses with both of those songs, too. "Dirty Day" is an exception; that was great live, esp. in the Sydney video.

But to answer the question, I'd be pretty shocked if they ever bust out one of these long-forgotten live songs down the road.

From: Mabel

In the middle of Pride, Bono is saying something, but I've never been able to make it out. Do you know what he's saying?

Dear Mabel:

He's saying "was it early morning, April 4, or early evening or a completely different day in April altogether?" He was obviously given the wrong information by someone in the studio (I suspect Brian Eno -- that guy never wears a watch or uses a calendar). To this day Bono regrets having sung the wrong date and time that his hero was cut down by an assassin's bullet. He has since studied the time zone differences between Memphis and Dublin.
