Answer Guy: Dokken vs. U2

From: Jack Growing up in a small Iowa town and attending an even smaller school, where every guy's only dance move was the "Axl Rose slithery-snake side-step" and every girl could "Push-it," I was known as that U2 freak. I was constantly on the defensive, fighting futile battle-of-the-band arguments. I still have flash-backs to one particular debate in the fall of 1987. Our boys were actually winning at that time in large part due to The Joshua Tree's smashing success on charts, MTV and radio play. But of course my fate was sealed when one cretin uttered the phrase, "Ok, fine, but which band is gonna be around longer? Dokken or U2?" When four out of the five-man jury wore Dokken concert tees (not bought at an actual concert, mind you) I was defeated. So I turn to thee, AG. Settle the eternal debate and allow me the re-trial I deserve. I pray tell, which band will be around longer, Dokken or U2? Dear Jack: This is a tough one. On the one hand, you have "All I Want Is You," on the other you have the soothing melody of "Breakin' the Chains" with its romantic refrain of "Breakin' the chains around you, nobody else can bind you, take a good look around you, now you're breakin' the chain." U2 has "Pride (In the Name of Love)" which celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with such lyrics as "free at last, they took your life, they could not take your pride." But before you hand them the trophy, listen to Dokken's much deeper lyrics to "Into the Fire": "into the fire, into the fire, I'm falling, into the fire, into the fire, I'm falling into the fire." Case closed? Not yet. U2 has several soundtrack songs to their credit, including the Oscar-nominated "The Hands That Built America." But long before U2 thought of expanding to the cinema, Don Dokken and the rest of the boys recorded a little gem called "Dream Warriors" for Nightmare On Elm Street 3 (1987). As the credits rolled after the award-winning film and the powerful Dokken song came on, one could almost forget the fabulous performances by Zsa Zsa Gabor and Dick Cavett in the often overlooked film. It may be a bit too early to crown a winner in the U2 v. Dokken challenge. Only time will tell. No word from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Committee on a possible date for the Dokken exhibit. Keep checking in with @U2 for details.
From: Carmine I'd like to know what's the deal with U2 releasing bonus tracks only in Japan? I understand when they release them in Ireland and U.K., and even when they sent those "Electrical Storm" wallets to U2 fans in U.K., but what's the deal with Japan? is it part of an apology for putting "BOMB JAPAN" in "The Fly" TV sequence during Zoo TV? Because all this started with "Bottoms" in Passengers, wasn'it? Dear Carmine: In Japan (and other countries), the market is such that it's actually less expensive for music fans to buy albums imported from other countries. Many of these "imports" are nothing more than pirated versions of the album and are sold at rock-bottom prices. So the local record label, in an attempt to get people to buy the home country's release instead of the cheaper imports, is allowed to add an extra track and/or other things.
From: (no name given) I was scanning through the Best of DVD credits the other day and noticed the name Aislinn Meehan listed among the names. Is this the Edge's ex-wife? Dear (no name given): Nope, different Aislinns. Edge's ex-wife is Aislinn O'Sullivan.
From: John I'm from Sydney, Australia and I was disappointed when U2 never came here for the Elevation tour. Was there any reason in particular as to why they never came Down Under? Dear John: Adam gave me three reasons:
