U2 breaks Giants Stadium record

Live Daily, September 28, 2009
By: Suzanne Kayian

U2 broke the house record at Giants Stadium last week when more than 84,000 people turned out for its 360 Tour at the New Jersey venue, according to a press release. Attendance at the band's Sept. 24 concert smashed the previous record that was set by Pope John Paul II's 1995 visit.

When Bono announced from the stage that the band had broken every attendance record in the stadium, he also acknowledged New Jersey's favorite son, Bruce Springsteen. "Sorry Bruce--we know it's your birthday and all," he said.

Later in the show, he also acknowledged the upcoming demolition of the famed stadium. "I know they're knocking this place down," he said. "We probably won't be here again before the wrecking ball but it was a magic place for us as well as the Giants."

The U2 360 Tour, which finishes the year at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium, will be extended through 2010, according to the press release. The band recently confirmed dates in Germany, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Austria, Greece, Turkey, France, Spain and Portugal.
