Summer 1982. I am 18. My grandma, who lives next door, has just gotten cable which means this new thing called MTV, which means I spend a heck of a lot of time planted in front of the TV. I keep seeing the video for this song called "Gloria" by this band I have never heard of. The guitar is one of the coolest sounds I have ever heard. I absolutely love this song.
Cut to a few months later. During that time I have obtained an import copy of the "Gloria" single. I am now standing in a record store looking at the "New Year's Day" double-pack of singles and debating about whether I should buy it (for about $5). Doubts run through my head: "What if it turns out I only like that one song of theirs? This could be a real waste of money." I do end up buying it, and this is the last time I ever question whether I want to buy something by U2.
The best part of all is that I've met several fans over the years who have become my closest and dearest friends. Besides the music, that is the greatest gift U2 has given me.
