Collectors' F.A.Q.

Question

From: R.D. Mauzy, California

I was reading your page about U2-3 and what not. Do you know what label the U2-3 cassette single was released by? I have a cassette released by CBS in its original CBS tape case, and there's no mention about it being released in 1985, it says 1979 on it. Just curious.

Chris Nilsen: The U2: 3 cassette single was issued by CBS, who had the exclusive rights to release U2 material in Ireland up to 1985 or '86, I believe. Since U2: 3 was originally released, copyrighted, published etc. in 1979, then all future issues should show that original date. All of the vinyl reissues show no date of pressing either, but we know they continued to press copies into the early 80's at least. Apparently when U2: 3 originally came out in 1979 it was on vinyl only, both 12" and 7". I've never seen any indication of a cassette release from that time period and I remember seeing them appear in stores around the mid 80's.

"About halfway through Pop, it occurred to us that as much as we enjoyed improvising with DJs and drum loops, we started to miss that quality that makes us U2."
