Collectors' F.A.Q.
Question
From: Susan, Columbus, Ohio
How can I tell if a CD I'm thinking of buying is a bootleg?
After finding out from your web site that the Melon CD I bought
over the Internet is not an original I want to make sure that
the Passengers CD I want to buy is authentic. Can you please
help?
Matt McGee: Sorry to hear about the
Melon purchase ... you still have the same music, so if that's
what matters to you, no reason to be upset. But in terms of
owning a collectible, the bootleg version really has no value
beyond what you can convince someone to pay.
As far as your concern about Passengers -- that was widely
released in stores, so you should be able to find a copy at
a local record store. Items like this are typically not bootlegged
because literally millions of official copies were pressed and
they stay on the store shelves for a long time like any other
album release. The difference with Melon is that it was never
released to stores, and supposedly only 20,000-50,000 copies
were pressed. Combine that with the fact that distribution was
limited to fan club members only, and you have a situation that's
ripe for bootlegging.
