Collectors' F.A.Q.
Question
From Jonathan Kerr, Massachusetts
First, I think this source is fantastic and thanks to all who
have contributed. Question: Any thoughts on the values of autographed
items. I am currently investigating a CD that was signed by
all four of the band members. But I'm also interested in the
general value of signatures on any product.
Paul Miller: I personally think,
firstly, it depends if any verification that they are genuine
can be done??
Secondly, it depends on the item. I recently saw an October
for sale fully signed, which included a letter from the band
(some sort of apology on loss of tickets, or something). The
guy selling the item wanted offers around £200+, now I
would have paid £100-£120 but £200....
I think at the end of the day, its a personal thing. I have
a couple of signed items ... but I would not get ripped off
for them.
Chris Nilsen: The value of any collectible
item is determined by supply and demand or desirability. Typically
you can get a full set of U2 autographs in the range of $100-$200
on a common item such as a CD or LP. If the sigs. are on a rare
single or something, the value of the piece should be taken
into consideration. Before buying autographs, make sure you
are dealing with a reputable person and get as much information
or documentation as possible to make sure you get the genuine
article. Good luck.
