"I Will Follow (live)" - Holland-only
7-inch
by Eric Naulaerts
Some history
In
1982 it became obvious that U2 would be one of the top bands
of the future. Especially in Holland and Belgium they started
to be succesfull. One of the Holland Radio & TV stations
(called Veronica) organised concerts on a regular base. On Friday
March 14th, 1982 they organised a concert with Dutch band Powerplay
and U2 at 't Heem in Hattem (this is the only correct spelling).
On friday night the radio station played the concert including
an interview with presenter Kees Baars. Six songs of the concert
were shown on Dutch television on July 7th, 1982, just after
the famous Torhout-Werchter Festival in Belgium (You can hear
three tracks from this Werchter concert on the New Year's Day
UK 2x7" and the 12").
By now they had conquered the Belgian and Dutch market, so
the record company must have tought to release a special single,
which is the famous I Will Follow (Live) 7". It was their
first single in the charts in Holland (12 on september 9th)
and Belgium.
The actual 7"
The front cover is a photo from the Werchter concert, it's
one of the first concerts where Bono waves with a flag. Bono
took this flag out of the public. It's a white flag with U2
in red letters. The back cover shows three pictures from the
Hattem concert. The Live version of I Will Follow is from the
Hattem concert. The B-side is the album version of Gloria. The
serial number for all pressings is 104.525, but on the Holland
pressings, the last 5 is not visible.
4 different pressings
There are four pressings of this 7" single, three from
Holland and one reissue from Germany.
